12 Mar PEI AWP Hosts AgriWatershed Information in Montague
On Tuesday, March 4, 2025 , the PEI AgriWatershed Partnership hosted an agri-watershed information meeting at Lane’s River House Inn in Montague. The theme of this year’s meeting was “Building Resilience in the Food Value Chain”. The choice of theme reflects the reality that consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their food choices. Food processors, fresh marketers, aggregators and primary producers are responding by working together to benchmark and implement sustainable practices that enhance environmental resilience while maintaining productivity.
An opening address was provided by Ian Petrie, SEA Board member and long time agricultural writer, followed by presentations from Griffin Baily, Regional Agronomist with the Little Potato Company – an agri-business that maintains a large presence in the area, Vernon Campbell, award winning processing potato grower who is a well known advocate for regenerative potato production practices and Danny MacKinnon, a local dairy farmer and Milk PEI Board member, relating the various strategies his operation uses production BMPs to ensure environmental and herd stewardship.
This meeting also provided an opportunity for watershed groups operating in the eastern Queens and Kings County to update the agriculture community with their activities. Presentations were made by South East Environmental Association, Belfast and Area Watershed Group, Morell River Management Cooperative, and Pisquid River Enhancement Project.
